Itella receives international recognition for its environmental work
Itella has been awarded for its contributions to environmental work and innovations. The postal industry’s international Environmental Achievement of the Year award was announced on September 28 in conjunction with the POST-EXPO Exhibition held in Stuttgart, Germany this month.
The award was given in recognition of Itella’s long-term commitment to environmental affairs as well as the company’s carbon-neutral delivery services, which Itella has been providing for its customers free of extra charge since last February.
Itella is the first – and so far the only – postal company in the world with a full range of carbon-neutral delivery services.
- This is a source of pride for us, as is the fact that our efforts have also been observed beyond the borders of Finland. We have earned this recognition together, said Itella’s Director in charge of communications and corporate responsibility, Päivi Ala-Kuijala, who accepted the award.
The Environmental Achievement of the Year constitutes one of six different categories included in the Postal Technology International Awards, now distributed for the third time.
- The Postal Technology International Awards recognize important global innovations which have an immediate impact on the lives of millions of people and which, for their part, promote the development of the postal industry. This year we were faced with the tough decision of having to decide among several particularly noteworthy development projects, said Tony Robinson, the founder of Postal Technology International magazine.
One of the principal goals of Itella’s environmental program is a 30 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2020. The most important means to attain this goal include the enhancement of energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources.
The activities involve all aspects of Itella’s operations – from deliveries to premises and supplier services. Furthermore, by offering carbon neutral delivery products, Itella can also contribute to the reduction of its customers’ emissions.
