Post Museum to undergo thorough renewal

17.03.2008

The Post Museum, located at the Helsinki General Post Office in the heart of Helsinki, will be renewed. At the end of March, the Museum will be closed for a period of five months due to an extensive renovation, to be reopened on 5th September, just before the 370th Anniversary of Posti in Finland.

The project involves the complete renewal of the Museum’s permanent exhibition, and the introduction of a novelty in the form of a section focussing on postcard displays. Simultaneously, the Museum’s book collection will be moved to the second floor in the General Post Office building, while the Museum’s shop and café are also revamped.

The Post Museum, one of Finland’s most popular museums, attracted almost 50,000 visitors in 2007 and overall, since 1927, a total of one million visitors. The millionth visitor was greeted with flowers in February.

There is still time to visit the Museum to see old postcards and pictures highlighting Istanbul, at an exhibition open until 30th March, i.e. until the renovation starts.

Housed in the Helsinki General Post Office, Asema-aukio 5 H, the Post Museum is open Mon.–Fri. from 9am until 6pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11am until 4pm. The admission fee is 4 and 3 euro, and entry is free for visitors under 18 years of age. On the weekend of 29th-30th March, immediately before the renovation begins, the Museum will offer free entry to all.

During the renewal of the Museum, Finnish postal history can be browsed on the Internet at www.posti.fi/postimuseo with an extensive web exhibition and information on the history of Finnish postal services.
