Transport with a Smaller Footprint

Cutting emissions with biogas-powered vehicles Itella now also delivers mail with minimum emissions – with biogas. We were the first in Finland to start using a natural-gas-powered vehicle for delivery purposes in 2006. Now we will start using 100% renewable and 100% Finnish Gasum biogas in our biogas-powered vehicles.

The raw material of biogas includes wastewater sewage sludge, for example. In practice, the use of biogas does not cause any small particles that are harmful to health. By using biogas, we will be able to cut our carbon dioxide emissions by 4,000 metric tons a year (by 2015). At the moment, we have 16 vehicles in use and our goal is to double the number of biogas-powered vehicles in the next few years.

Environmentally friendly subcontracting In tendering processes for subcontractors, we use an environmental point system observing the vehicles' European emission classes. We require that our partners' vehicles be at least of the Euro III class, preferably in the Euro IV class.

When acquiring transport services, Itella favors transportation companies who have signed the energy efficiency contract for the transportation sector and taken measures accordingly.
Electric mopeds for mail delivery Itella is testing the suitability of electric mopeds for mail delivery in various locations in Finland. In 2008 - 2011, we have acquired a total of 30 electric mopeds specially designed for mail delivery.

In mail delivery, the carbon dioxide emissions of an electric moped amount to only about 30% compared to a similar moped with a combustion engine. Moreover, electric mopeds are almost totally silent, which is pleasant for work as well as for the environment. Our aim is to increase the share of electric mopeds to 50% of our entire moped fleet by 2012.
